Green Corridors York Community of Practice

The Green Corridors York Community of Practice came about after feedback by Green Corridors York partners and stakeholders around a need to build capacity and resource across the city to effectively deliver nature recovery effectively across York and beyond. The key themes from the feedback were:

  • a lack of skills (practical management and surveying and identifying), and related to that a lack of local training opportunities.
  • a desire for opportunities to learn from others and share best practice.
  • regular opportunities to network and find out what others are up to.

From the feedback, and thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Community of Practice (CoP) was set up. The aim was to create a programme of workshops and events to bring land managers and practitioners together to increase collaborative working, building resource and capacity across corridors, the city and region. An online space on Wild York would be developed to host the CoP.

An initial workshop was held in September 2024 focusing on the development of York Central. This was followed by a more regular schedule of workshops and events in 2025. It is still early days and the CoP is still being developed and improved to ensure it meets the needs of the cities nature recovery practitioners.

From 2025 the CoP is also being supported by UK Research and Innovation funding through the YPIP project. This additional funding aims to test and demonstrate the value of improved knowledge exchange in increasing nature recovery by building and growing the CoP to:

  • reach beyond established boundaries between disciplines
  • bring together professional, academic and community expertise
  • to co-design solutions and identify policy levers;
